Candy Box
Fortune
& Blessing

The Chinese candy box, which is also known as the “tray of togetherness”, plays a significant role in Chinese New Year, the most important Chinese festival of the whole year.  The box which is circular or octagonal shaped fills up with different kind of traditional candies and tidbits, all of which have symbolically auspicious meanings. When your relatives and friends visit, you can first greet and then offer them some lucky nibbles from the candy box along with your blessings.

This year ifc mall presents “beautiful: weaving good wishes” and collaborates with Annie Wong, an up-and-coming young local knitting artist. The mega candy box at ifc mall features hand-knitted Chinese auspicious symbols, like tangerine for good fortune, gold ingots symbolising wealth, fish and red packets for prosperity and happiness, which are iconic in Chinese New Year.

Knitting is with infinite possibilities with threads and yarns connecting with each other. ifc mall wishes to bring new year happiness into the art installation, spread blessings to all and celebrate new beginnings together.
About Annie Wong

Annie Wong graduated from Central Saint Martins in London, with a main focus on studying textile design. She is now a creative consultant, home goods designer, textile coach and artist.

Influenced by her grandmother as a child, she has been passionate about knitting and fabrics since young. During her time in London, her education inspired her to use various materials other than yarn to knit and crochet.

Upon returning to Hong Kong after her education in the UK, she launched “The Mint Box Studio”, a creative workshop, teaching crochet skills and knitting as private lessons or in beautifully curated workshops, to change the common perception of knitting from being simply a traditional handicraft. From the conventional way of knitting, to reusing waste as material, and to using arms as a form of knitting tool, Annie demonstrates that the realm of knitting can be far beyond your imagination.
